Family members of Amit, a resident of Char Swarupganj-Sukantanagar, said he had inadvertently given a missed call to Bijan’s wife Purnima, who lives in nearby Bhagirathi school lane, on September 16.

Victim’s cousin Joydeb said: “It was an inadvertent call. My brother had no ill motive at all. He was apologetic to the woman. Nevertheless, the following day (September 17), Bijan summoned my brother and thrashed him in public with the threat of dire consequences.”

“Yesterday morning, Amit was again summoned by Bijan and his aides who took him to a tea stall in the Panshila area where he was thrashed. Amit returned home and later in the afternoon, we found him hanging with a rope from the ceiling of his room,” Joydeb said, adding that Amit had committed suicide because of sheer humiliation.

The family has lodged a complaint with the police. The family members of the deceased youth accused the local Trinamul leadership of patronising Bijan and his aides that encouraged them to unleash terror in the area. The angry residents ransacked the homes of Bijan and three of his aides. They also gheraoed the Nabadwip police station on Sunday night demanding the arrest of the four accused persons. On Monday, angry residents, along with BJP activists, blocked the Krishnagar-Nabadwip road demanding the arrest of Bijan and a thorough probe.Trinamul’s Nabadwip block president Sajal Kar said: “The accused had been with the party till 2021... it was a personal conflict between two individuals and the party had nothing to do.”
