A third year student of the Indian Institute of Hotel Management was found hanging in his room at the Taratala campus on Thursday. Police said according to a purported note found in the room, Aritra Mukherjee was suffering from depression, unable to cope with the pressure of the studies.
An officer said, before joining the institute, Aritra had met with a road accident that caused neurological disorder and consequently he was unable to cope with his academic pressure.
Aritra is a resident of Kabi Nabin Sen Road in Dum Dum. “His mother was in constant touch with him over phone. On Thursday morning, when she found his phone unanswered, she called the hostel warden to check upon him. The room was locked from inside and had to be broken into,” said an officer of Taratala police station.
He was found hanging with a nylon rope to a bamboo pole that the other students had set up for exercise.
He was brought down and taken to Vidya Sagar State General Hospital where he was declared dead. The body was removed and sent for post-mortem. An unnatural death case has been started with the Taratala police station.
A purported note found in the room suggested that he was unable to cope with the studies and unable to perform according to his desires, an officer said. The note also mentioned that he had taken wrong decision since class XI.
