The health department will arrange transportation and accommodation for health professionals in government hospitals that are treating coronavirus patients so the service is not disrupted, officials in the department said on Thursday.
The department took the decision after nurses at the Infectious Diseases and Beleghata General Hospital circulated a video in which they said they did not get drop home even two hours after their shift ended on Thursday morning.
The 12-hour night shift ended at 8am. The hospital allegedly was unable to arrange transport for them even after 10am. Some of the nurses were heard asking in the video how they could be back at the hospital by 8 at night if they could not leave for home even after 10am.
“The transportation won’t be an issue any more,” a health department official said later in the day.
“We have also tied up with three hotels where health professionals, including doctors and nurses, could stay. Sixty-four rooms have been booked so far. We are also improving the basic facilities where some nurses are staying on the campus,” said the official.
Rooms have been booked at Pearl Hotel, Bengal Inn and Om Sai Villa Guest House, all of which are close to the Beleghata hospital. Bengal Inn is located on Suresh Chandra Banerjee Road in Beleghata, Pearl Hotel is opposite the Salt Lake stadium and Om Sai Villa Guest House is in Phoolbagan.
“The three hotels have been identified because of their proximity to the Beleghata hospital. There will be transportation to and from the hotels,” the health department official said.
