The state sports and youth affairs department has sanctioned a sum of ₹1.14 crore for the repair and renovation of the indoor stadium in Alipurduar, much to the elation of sportspersons and sports enthusiasts of the town and the district as a whole.
For years now, the indoor sports arena located in the district headquarters has been in a dilapidated condition. Those associated with indoor sports in the district have repeatedly demanded that the stadium be refurbished so that different tourneys can be organised here.
“The state government has sanctioned ₹1.14 crore for repair and renovation works at the indoor stadium,” said R. Vimala, the district magistrate of Alipurduar.
Sources in the administration said that as the Election Commission of India has announced a by-poll in the Madarihat Assembly seat of the district, the model code of conduct is in force in the district now.
“Once the by-poll is over, tenders would be floated for the work,” said a source.
As per the plan, the main building of the stadium would be renovated and painted, certain electrical works would be carried out, pavements would be built and the boundary wall would be repaired with the fund.
“The indoor stadium required extensive repair works. Even the sewerage system is in shambles and needs thorough repairs to keep the infrastructure fit for sports events,” said a source.
Debasish Goswami, vice president of the District Sports and Games Association of Alipurduar, has welcomed the decision.
“We appreciate the state’s decision to sanction funds for the indoor stadium. Simultaneously, we would request the state to consider the longstanding demand for an outdoor stadium at the Parade Ground of the town to promote outdoor sports. There are many talented athletes, footballers and cricketers in the district but they do not have proper infrastructure to practice,” he said.
