A woman in her late 60s was walking through the bamboo barricades towards Gate 2 of the Eden Gardens on Saturday afternoon.

She was clad in a pink kameez and was carrying a Tricolour headband. The woman stood out in the crowd of mostly youngsters for her unhurried gait.

Vidyavati Sahu had come with her son Kripa Nidhi Sahu, who works in the human resource department of a private sector company headquartered in Calcutta.

“I did not bring her, she brought me,” said Kripa, who wore a pink T-shirt — a couple of shades brighter than the colour of his mother’s kurta — and carried the Tricolour.

Vidyavati loves watching cricket on the TV for hours. In recent years, she has taken to women’s cricket. She thoroughly enjoyed the just-concluded T-20 series in the Caribbean, which the Indian eves won 5-0.

“I really enjoy watching the Indian women team play. My favourite player is Smriti Mandhana,” said Vidyavati.

The family hails from Chhattisgarh but have been living in Calcutta’s South City complex for the past few years because of Kripa’s job.

Vidyavati loves cricket but has never been to a cricket stadium. With all the hype, the pink-ball Test between India and Bangladesh was the perfect occasion for her to make the debut. “She was keen on coming to the ground. She suggested that we wear pink,” said Kripa.

The stadium looked more majestic in person than it does on TV, she said.

No prizes for guessing Vidyavati’s favourite among the Men in Blue. “I want to see Virat Kohli score a century,” she said.

The Day Two tickets were decided upon primarily because it is an off day for Kripa.

But since Kohli was unbeaten at 59 overnight, Vidyavati was “extra kicked” about coming to the ground.
