St Xavier’s University will stop its postgraduate commerce course in the day section and offer it only in the morning from the academic session starting July 2020.

Most students favour the course in the morning section, prompting the university to take the decision of doing away with the day section, vice-chancellor Father Felix Raj said on Saturday. “The university will offer the MCom course in the morning section instead of day from the 2020 academic session.”

He made the announcement at a function on the university’s campus in New Town to celebrate its fourth foundation day.

Several students have wanted the MCom course in the morning as it would allow them to spend the latter part of the day preparing for all-India entrance exams and other professional courses.

Many students pursuing the course at the university are meritorious; they come from business families who aim to crack the CAT, CA and CS, the vice-chancellor said. “These students will benefit from the morning MCom course.”

The institute had started the morning unit for BCom in 2019 for the same reason.

The university will run five sections in the morning shift — one for MCom and four for BCom. The BCom sections started last year.

The day section for BCom course will continue, though.

The 159-year old St Xavier’s College on Park Street, which has the distinction of having one of the best commerce departments in the country, has a morning section for BCom.

It had started its commerce morning unit in 1946 with the idea to help students from the city’s business families devote their time during the latter part of the day in managing their family businesses.

Both MCom and BCom classes in the morning section will be held from 7am to noon at the university.

The day classes are held between 10am and 4pm.

“Our university is fast progressing in the true Xaverian spirit — Nihil Ultra, which means nothing beyond,” Father Felix Raj said.

The university has started a business school and a law school and both are “doing well”, he said.
