"I have told them we will ensure the government will promptly act once the Hon'ble court issues any order. We will not be found wanting," Chatterjee said.

Around 100 SSC candidates, waiting for appointments in upper primary schools in the state since a long time, have been staging a sit-in since Tuesday before state Education Department headquarters at Bikash Bhavan in Calcutta.

A delegation met the Education Minister on Wednesday afternoon to discuss their grievances.

A spokesperson of the protesting candidates said that during the hour-long discussion, Chatterjee cited cases filed in the Calcutta High Court regarding SSC appointments as the reason behind the delay in the appointments of a large number of teachers in upper primary schools.

"We will continue to sit here peacefully till there is a favourable development with regard to our demands," he said.

An official from the School Education Department said Chatterjee met a four-member delegation of the protesting SSC candidates and urged them to withdraw their demonstration but they refused.
