A Honda City that police tried to stop on Camac Street to check documents on Wednesday evening allegedly dodged the cops, breached another cordon and hit two policemen and as many pedestrians when a traffic signal was manually turned red to halt the car.
The police said it was not clear why the man at the wheel — Akash Pandey, 28 — tried to break the police cordon and flee.
Pandey, a resident of College Street, reportedly told the police that he was “scared” at the sight of the cops.
He was arrested later in the night. Officers said a breathalyser test on him for alcohol was negative.
The incident happened on Camac Street when the stretch was busy with vehicles and pedestrians. Several police officers said a major accident was averted.
As the white Honda City came to a halt after hitting four persons, people in the area attacked the car with bricks and smashed the front windscreen.
Traffic cops rescued Pandey and handed him to officers at Shakespeare Sarani police station.
“The car was moving down Camac Street towards the Theatre Road crossing. As it was being driven recklessly, two cops signalled the driver to stop at the crossing of Camac Street and Middleton Street. The car did not stop and sped off. At a naka checkpoint at the Camac Street-Ho Chi Minh Sarani crossing, officers again tried to stop the car but the Honda City tore through the cordon and moved forward towards the Camac Street-Theatre Road crossing,” said an officer of Kolkata Police’s south division.
Traffic cops alerted their counterparts at the next crossing and the traffic signal at the Camac Street-Shakespeare Sarani crossing was manually turned red to stop the Honda City.
“The moment the signal turned red and the Honda City driver realised that he would not be able to move forward, he tried to take a U-turn and mounted the pavement in front of the Pantaloons-Westside building and hit two parked motorcycles, two policemen and two pedestrians before a tyre fell into a pothole and the car stopped,” said the officer.
Traffic cops took Pandey to the police station.
