The Special Task Force (STF) of Bengal police on Friday arrested another person from Chennai in connection with his alleged links with Bangladesh-based terror outfits. This is the third arrest in the case since last Sunday.
STF sources said Class III dropout Sheikh Anwar, 27, a resident of Kulshona village in Mangalkote of East Burdwan used to work at a laundry in Chennai. The STF said they got the name of Anwar after interrogating Mohammad Habibulla and Heraz Sheikh, who are in custody.
Anwar had met with Habibulla and Heraz at a religious gathering in Katwa in 2020 and became friends. Anwar was brought to Durgapur on transit remand and produced at the ACJM court in Durgapur on Saturday. The court remanded him in police custody for a fortnight.
"Anwar was in touch with the Bangladesh-based Islamist terror outfits for the past four years. He is a resident of East Burdwan but works at a laundry in Chennai," said an STF official.
He said Anwar inspired Habibulla and Heraz to join the Shahadat Bengal module of the Bangladesh-based Islamist terror outfit.
Mohammad Habibulla, 20, a second-year computer science student at Mankar College, was arrested from his residence at Mirpara on Saturday night by the STF. Heraz, a resident of Mayapur in Nadia, was arrested on Tuesday from outside Howrah station.
