The Special Task Force (STF) of Bengal police on Tuesday arrested a Nadia resident from outside Howrah station for his alleged links with Bangladesh-based terror outfits.

STF sources said Heraz Sheikh, 27, a resident of Mayapur in Nadia, was about to board a Delhi-bound train when the police arrested him. STF officers said Sheikh was trying to escape after the arrest of Mohammed Habibulla from West Burdwan's Kanksa on similar charges.

Investigators said they had got the name of Heraz after interrogating Habibulla, who is now in their custody.

"We raided Heraz's residence at Mollapara in Mayapur last night but he was not there. Later, we received information that he had been located near Howrah station and was trying to escape," said an STF officer in Durgapur.

Heraz was brought to Durgapur and produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate's court which remanded him in police custody for a fortnight.

Habibulla, 20, a second-year computer science student at Mankar College, was arrested from his residence at Mirpara in Kanksa on Sunday early morning by the STF.

The STF claimed both Habibulla and Heraz had links with two banned Islamist organisations — Ansar al-Islam and Shahadat-e al Hiqma — of Bangladesh.

Both of them were booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, under which the maximum punishment is death or life imprisonment.

STF officers said they had got the names of three more persons who were involved with Habibulla and were on a mission to form a module of the Bangladesh-based Islamist terror outfit in Bengal. They had planned to name it Shahadat.

The STF has also seized Habibulla's laptop, mobile phone, some documents allegedly linked to the outfit and a diary.
