South Dinajpur police arrested a police constable in connection with the death of a tribal girl on Tuesday.
Sources said Mithu Tudu, a constable with the state police and a resident of Atir, a locality in Balurghat block, was posted in Cooch Behar.
On October 15, the girl, who was a college student, went to watch the Durga Puja immersion when she met Mithu, allegedly her boyfriend.
As she didn’t return home afterward, her family members started searching for her.
Eventually, her body was found hanging from a tree.
“My sister had an affair with Mithu and she used to go out with him. On October 15, too, she went out with him and her body was found later. We want to know what led to her death. The police arrested him. We believe they will find out the truth,” said the girl’s brother.
"The accused constable has been arrested. Our officers are gathering information about the case,” said a police officer.
During the investigation, the police came to know that after having an affair for about a year, the girl asked Mithu to marry her.
“Reportedly, he didn’t agree. We suspect he is involved in some other affair. Hence, his relationship with this girl had become strained,” the officer added.
The location of Mithu’s cell phone showed where the girl’s body was recovered from. Her handbag and cell phone lay nearby, said sources.
On Tuesday, Mithu was produced in a local court and was sent in police custody for seven days.
