South Dinajpur: Car rams into stationary truck, two die

Police sources say the vehicle was on its way to Malda from Gangarampur

Two persons died when a car they were travelling in rammed into the rear of a truck that was parked on NH512 at Mehendipara near Harirampur in South Dinajpur district on Monday evening.

Police sources said the car was on its way to Malda from Gangarampur and when it reached Mehendipara, the driver lost control. After the car hit the truck, local people brought out two injured persons and took them to a health centre in Harirampur where doctors pronounced them dead.

The deceased were Kajal Chakraborty, 41, a resident of Stadiumpara of Gangarampur, and Ashish Sarkar, 38, who was at the wheel. He belonged to Kaldighi-Hospitalpara area of Gangarampur. The police have seized the vehicles.

Examinees injured

Three Madhyamik examinees were injured in a head-on collision between two motorbikes at Phansidewa in the Siliguri subdivision on Tuesday. The trio were heading towards the exam centre.

They were rushed to the rural hospital in Phansidewa where doctors admitted Mohammad Rahit, one of the students, who suffered serious injuries. The other two were released after being administered first-aid.

Later, Rahit appeared in the exam from the hospital, said sources.
