Thirty-four boarders of a tribal school in south Dinajpur were hospitalised with suspected food poisoning after their breakfast on Thursday.

The students of Eklavya Model Residential School, which is under the state tribal department and situated in Banshihari block of Gangrampur subdivision, were served puffed rice, jaggery and egg for the breakfast.

“After the breakfast, many started feeling unwell. By noon, some students started complaining of stomach upset, headache and vomiting,” said Sampa Oraon, a student.

The school authorities immediately provided medicines to the children for the stomach ache, but their condition didn’t improve. “So, we took 34 students to the Rashidpur rural hospital in the evening,” said Namita Sakar, a school official. “We are clueless about the cause of the sickness.”

A total of 24 students were later discharged.

“Ten students are still under treatment but their condition is stable. Doctors suspect food poisoning to be the cause of the sickness,” said a source.

The school houses 200 students and is one of a kind in the district.

The Banshihari block health officer, Pulakesh Saha, said an enquiry was being conducted into the incident.
