The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) hit out at the CPM and the CPI for holding hands with the Congress, a party that it holds equally responsible along with the BJP for the angst of the downtrodden and the communal division that has unfolded in post-Independent India.

"Once the (undivided) CPI was the largest Opposition party in Parliament. What is their fate today?.... What is the fate of the CPM today? They have held the hand of the Congress.... What is unfolding in the country today has its roots in India ruled by the Congress," Provash Ghosh, the general secretary of the SUCI(C), said.

The SUCI(C) held a well-attended rally at Brigade Parade Grounds after 35 years to mark the end of the birth centenary celebrations of the party's founder, Shibdas Ghosh, on Saturday.

In much of his two-and-a-half-hour speech, Ghosh attacked the undivided CPI and the CPM while at the same time giving the call for a greater Left alliance.

"I will appeal to all Left forces to come together, but not for electoral politics. We must come together to serve the interest of the people," Ghosh said.

State unit secretary of the SUCI(C) Chandidas Bhattacharya added: "Much of the policies that the BJP is pursuing today had been inherited from the Congress."

Ghosh also spoke of the vacuum the Left Front's defeat created in Bengal since 2011.

Criticising the CPM's decision to form an alliance with Congress and the ISF during the 2021 Assembly polls, Ghosh took a dig at the biggest constituent of the Left Front in Bengal for entering the INDIA alliance of which Trinamul is also a part.

Ghosh mentioned Trinamul a few times in his speech and referred to the party as "corrupt and bloodthirsty". He attacked the Trinamul for turning elections into a farce. However, the minutes spent on Trinamul were fewer compared to the time Ghosh spent on slamming the other Communist parties.

"They (SUCI) are Trinamul's agent. What Trinamul taught them they will repeat that," said CPM's central committee member Samik Lahiri.

"What does he (Ghosh) understand of the INDIA alliance?" he added.

SUCI(C) contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2009 in alliance with Trinamul, which was also in alliance with Congress then. The party supported Mamata Banerjee during the Singur and Nandigram movements.

Ghosh lashed out against the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, stressing it was important to unseat the saffron camp in the general elections. But he said the INDIA alliance would be a similar misfortune for the people of the country. According to Ghosh, the constituents of the INDIA coalition, primarily the regional parties, were all corrupt.
