Calcutta police have formed a special investigation team to probe the death of BJP youth wing leader Arjun Chowrasia, whose body was found in abandoned railway quarters in Cossipore on Friday.

A senior police officer in Lalbazar said the three-member team had officers from Chitpur police station and the homicide wing of the detective department.

Chowrasia, 26, was found hanging inside an abandoned Cossipore railway colony building on Friday morning, triggering allegations that he had been murdered and hanged.

“The incident is extremely sensitive, more so because of the involvement of political parties. A separate probe team has been formed to pursue the case, considering its gravity,” the senior officer said.

The primary task of the SIT will be to ascertain the cause of Chowrasia’s death and the circumstances that led to it, another officer in the detective department said.

The officers of the homicide wing have mapped the “crime scene” with a three-dimensional scanner that captures images of a place from multiple directions and perspectives. This helps investigators to examine the spot from their office.

Chowrasia’s family and party colleagues have alleged murder and demanded a CBI probe. On the orders of Calcutta High Court that heard a petition from the BJP, Chowrasia’s post-mortem was conducted at the Command Hospital instead of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body had initially been taken by Calcutta police.

Union home minister Amit Shah, who had been in Calcutta on the day Chowrasia was found dead, had met the youth leader’s family members, backed calls for a CBI probe and said his ministry had sought a report on violence from the Bengal government. He had called it a political murder.
