The state government-appointed special investigation team (SIT), which is probing the mysterious death of Left-leaning student leader Anis Khan, submitted its preliminary report before Calcutta High Court on Tuesday.

A pen drive containing the status report of the investigation, post-mortem report and reports by both the central and state forensic laboratories, was submitted before Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of the court.

State advocate-general S.N. Mukherjee appealed for permission to perform polygraph tests on the accused to which the judge granted permission.

The judge asked the government to keep the report confidential till further orders from the court. A copy of the report was handed over to advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, the counsel appearing for Salem Khan, Anis's father. The judge also asked Bhattacharyya not to make the report public.

Student leader and resident of Amta in Howrah, Anis , who had been staging protests against the state government for 130 days, died mysteriously on February 19 this year.

His family members, the CPM and the Congress claimed Anis was murdered and sought a CBI probe.

Anis’s father had moved Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI probe into the case. But Justice Mantha allowed the state appointed SIT to continue with its investigation. The judge had asked the SIT to submit its report on April 18.

The SIT report had reached the court on Monday, April 18, but could not be presented as the judge was absent. Anis’s father had then told reporters that he was not sure whether the judge was ill or did not attend the court as the government was putting pressure on him.

On Tuesday, state lawyer Achintya Bandyopadhyay claimed before court that the father’s remark amounted to contempt of court. The judge asked Salem to file an affidavit seeking an apology from the court.
