Calcutta High Court on Monday provided another month’s time to the special investigation team (SIT), which was set up by the state government to probe the death of student leader Anis Khan, to submit its final report to the court.

“At this stage of inquiry, the court does not want to interfere. The court is awarding one more month’s time to the SIT. Then the court will decide its future course of action after one month,” Justice Rajasekhar Mantha said after hearing the case on Monday.

Anis, a 27-year-old former student of Aliah University, was found dead outside his home in Howrah’s Amta early on February 19. Family members of Anis have consistently demanded a CBI probe and claimed he had been thrown off the roof of their home by policemen who had come in search of the student leader.

The high court ordered a second post-mortem of Anis’ body under the supervision of the district judge of Howrah.

Last Friday, the SIT submitted its preliminary report to the court through the district judge of Howrah. Senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, who represents Anis’s family, told the court on Monday that “there is nothing in the report”. “It has only narrated how the court order was being carried out by the committee,” said Bhattacharyya.

Justice Mantha asked the state government’s lawyer Amitesh Banerjee about the delay in filing the final report.

Banerjee said: “Until the SIT receives findings of the State Forensic Laboratory and the Central Forensic Lab, the investigation will not proceed.”

The judge then directed the SFL and the CFL to send its reports to the SIT within 10 days and granted the SIT another month’s time to file its final report.

Anubrata appeal

Birbhum Trinamul Congress president Anubrata Mondal on Monday moved an appeal before the division bench of Calcutta High Court challenging a single judge bench’s rejection of his plea for relief from appearing before the CBI in a cattle smuggling case.
