Foresters of Baikunthapur forest division recovered two rare turtles from alocality of Siliguri on Sunday. Two persons have been arrested in this connection.

Sources said that on Sunday, foresters spotted a video of two Indian Tent Turtles —a schedule-I animal species— on social media. The video, showing the turtles in an aquarium, was uploaded by a woman resident of the city.

“We came to know about the turtles through the video. Immediately, we located the house at Bankimnagar inward 41 of the city and recovered the turtles. A parakeet was also recovered from the house,” said a forester.

Bapi Dutta, from whose house the turtles were recovered, was arrested on Sunday. So was pet shop owner Koushik Bhowmik, from whom Dutta had bought the animals, on Monday.

During interrogation, Dutta revealed the location of the pet shop, Sanhati More in Siliguri.

“The turtles and the parakeet have been sent to BengalSafari Park. Charges under Wildlife (Protection) Act have been brought against both Dutta and Bhowmik,” the forester added.
