The Siliguri Metropolitan Police arrested five persons allegedly involved in the attack on a property of the Ramakrishna Mission located off Sevoke Road in Siliguri last Sunday.

Dipak Sarkar, the deputy commissioner of police (east), told newspersons on Wednesday that the arrested five were involved in the attack.

After the incident last Sunday, the secretary of the Jalpaiguri unit of Ramakrishna Mission had complained with Bhaktinagar police station, he said.

“Based on the complaint, we initiated a probe and arrested five persons. Some more persons, including Pradip Roy, the principal accused, are still at large. We are in search of them,” said Sarkar.

Arrested Shambhu Mahato, Shambhu Das, Debasish Sarkar and Shyamal Baidya, are from Bhaktinagar, and the fifth, Rajib Basak, is from Matigara, located in the northwest outskirts of Siliguri.

Early on Sunday, a group of goons had barged into Sewak Bhavan, the property of RKM. They had assaulted two security guards and five workers of RKM and forced them to board a vehicle. Later, they were released at different localities near New Jalpaiguri station and were threatened with dire consequences.

This made RKM authorities file a complaint with the police. Also, Roy filed a counter-complaint, accusing a monk of RKM and some others for threatening him. He is the rightful owner of the property, Roy had claimed.

After the incident, police had sealed the property. Since Tuesday night, policemen have been deployed at the building premises, which is vacant now.

“We did it to keep the place of occurrence of the incident undisturbed,” said the DCP.

During the investigation, the police found that the 1.59-acre land, on which the two-storey building is located, belonged to Tukra Singh.

“In his complaint, Pradip Roy claimed it was his ancestral property. We are, however, not buying his story as we have found that Tukra Singh had sold the land to someone who in turn had sold it to Sunil Kumar Roy who eventually gifted it to the Ramakrishna Mission,” said a police source.

The RKM authorities, sources said, have proceeded with the mutation of the property and are supposed to get it in a month.

Later in the day, the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Jalpaiguri ordered five days in police custody for the five persons arrested in connection with the case, said sources.
