The Siliguri Municipal Corporation has decided to set up a giant screen in Siliguri to beam live coverage of the semi-final and final matches of the ICC World Cup.

The semi-final will be held on Wednesday and the final on November 19.

"We will live stream the semi-final match between India and New Zealand on Wednesday and also the final match of the ongoing ICC World Cup on Sunday at Baghajatin Park on a giant screen,” said Gautam Deb, the mayor of the SMC.

"We hope the audience will enjoy the match more on a giant screen,” he said.

During the FIFA World Cup last year, the civic body had taken a similar initiative at the same venue. The mayor claimed that over 10,000 people had visited the park to watch the football final.

"We don’t know which team would qualify for the final of the tournament. But all we want the people to throng into the Baghajatin Park and cheer for Team India in the semi-final and final, because we want the World Cup to remain in India,” Ranjan Sarkar, the deputy mayor of the civic body, said.

The World Cup has already provided a platform for cricket enthusiasts from the town to demand a cricket stadium in north Bengal’s biggest town.

Many residents of Siliguri who attended the recent India-South Africa match at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta were seen holding placards demanding a cricket match while the match was being played.

"We may not have a separate cricket arena in the city but the live streaming of a World Cup match on a giant screen in an open space will increase the enthusiasm of cricket lovers,” said Manoj Verma, the cricket secretary of Siliguri Mahakuma Krira Parishad, the sports association of Siliguri organizational district, said.
