“Me and my father explaining the Didi Ke Bolo campaign when around 12 to 14 youths, who had assembled in front of a temple, hurled abuses at us. As I protested, some of them attacked me. As my father came to my rescue, they caught and beat him. He was punched in his nose,” said Durga.

A Trinamul councillor in the middle of a Didi Ke Bolo campaign and her father were thrashed in Siliguri on Monday night, with the leader claiming one of the attackers was the brother of a local BJP leader.

Councillor Durga Singh said she and her father were accosted by the gang in the Ganganagar area, which she represents. Amarnath Singh, her father, was punched in the nose.

Durga alleged that the miscreants snatched her gold ornaments and her father’s cellphone.

Two persons, Jitender Singh and Raju Dutta, have been arrested. Though Durga did not mention the BJP’s involvement in her complaint, she claimed Jitender was the brother of a BJP leader in her ward.

“The attack is condemnable and police should take proper steps,” minister Gautam Deb said after visiting Amarnath in hospital.

Mayor Asok Bhattacharya also condemned the incident.
