A paraglider from Sikkim, who was taking part in the Meghalaya Open Paragliding Accuracy Championship at Rapleng village in East Khasi Hills district, was seriously injured when he lost control of hang gliding and crashed on a field on Saturday.
Sher Bahadur Gurung, from Yangang in Sikkim’s Namchi district, was taking part in the sixth round of the accuracy event when the accident happened. “He broke his left hand and fractured his hip. He is being treated at a hospital in Shillong,” Raju Rai, chief judge at the event, said on Sunday.
Rai, also the technical adviser of the Sikkim Paragliding Association, said Gurung lost control of his paraglider a little before landing. “The paraglider went on auto rotation and crashed,” he said.
Gurung was representing Fly Sikkim Adventure in the championship. Rinzing Doma Bhutia from Sikkim won a gold medal in the women’s event at the meet.
