A video circulating on Thursday purportedly shows the “face” of the Sandeshkhali protests, who’s now a BJP candidate, and an aide, questioning the credibility of some of the alleged victims who met President Droupadi Murmu in Delhi on March 15.
“We need to know who went there (to Rashtrapati Bhavan),” BJP Basirhat candidate Rekha Patra appears to say in the video, which has given Trinamool fresh ammunition to attack the BJP and question the veracity of the Sandeshkhali allegations.
Rekha’s close aide and party colleague Mampi Das appears to also question the credentials of local BJP leader Anup Das, who accompanied the five women to Delhi.
“Who are those who ultimately met the President?” Mampi purportedly asks.
The Telegraph has not verified the authenticity of the video.
The video comes days after a “sting” video appeared to show another local BJP leader saying women in Sandeshkhali were given Rs 2,000 each to file rape and sexual abuse complaints on the instructions of party leader Suvendu Adhikari.
On March 15, five Sandeshkhali women — alleged victims of local Trinamool (now suspended) strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides — met Murmu and submitted a memorandum to her.
A non-government body, the Centre for SC/ST Support and Research, led by its director Partha Biswas, had taken the women to Delhi.
In the video, Mampi appears to accuse Das, the accompanying BJP leader, of being a stooge of arrested Shahjahan aide Shib Prasad Hazra.
“We heard that some women victims were taken to the President Madam.... I heard Anup Das took them there. But this Anup Das used to take Rs 10,000 secretly every month from Shibu Hazra,” Mampi purportedly says in the video.
“We all went to meet the Prime Minister (in Barasat).... So why did they go to meet President Madam without informing us? Who are those who ultimately met the President?”
Rekha appears to say: “If we as victims stay in Sandeshkhali, we need to know who went there (to Rashtrapati Bhavan).... Is Trinamool extending support from behind?”
Rekha and some of the alleged victims had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Barasat earlier in March.
On Thursday, Rekha filed her nomination from Basirhat, under which Sandeshkhali falls, but refused to comment on her purported remarks in the video.
Mampi, who was accompanying Rekha, acknowledged her statement in the video but claimed it had a “different context”. She did not elaborate.
Das said the video could be fake.
Adhikari claimed this video, as well as last week’s “sting” video, was fake. He alleged that both videos were a conspiracy hatched by Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee and the political consultancy firm, I-PAC.
“I am prepared to go to any length to unearth the truth behind these videos,” Adhikari said.
Trinamool Sandeshkhali MLA Sukumar Mahato said: “People across Bengal are shocked after learning the truth. They will give a fitting reply to the BJP for dishonouring the dignity of women and defaming Bengal.”
