The SFI formed the students’ union at Presidency University late on Thursday after winning the campus polls.

The polls were held at the College Street institution after almost three years.

The SFI won all five office-bearers’ post, a university official said late on Thursday. It also got the highest number of seats in the constituency representatives, the results of which were declared in the afternoon.

“Of the 116 constituency representative posts, the SFI won 57. They are one short of the magic figure. They have swept all the five office-bearers’ posts. The Independents Consolidation has lost the polls,” the official who was part of the counting process said.

Some official said the Independents Consolidation, which was in the forefront of renovation and reopening of Eden Hindu Hostel, could not keep its ranks unified.

“Unlike the SFI, they could not cultivate the young leadership. Even on the hostel movement, they lost control... the main gate had been closed for a day before the convocation last year, following which the event had to be shifted outside the campus,” an official said.

The convocation was held at the Nandan-II auditorium in September last year.

“Many students did not like the excess,” a third-year student said.

“The victory at Presidency will embolden us to perform better in campus polls elsewhere,” Shuvajit Sarkar, a member of the SFI state committee, said.

“We are assessing the reasons behind our defeat,” Sayan Chakravarty, an IC leader, said.

The SFI had last won the polls in Presidency in 2010, when the institute was a government college.
