The Calcutta Municipal Corporation has built a 4km-long sewer under James Long Sarani and plans to make it functional in a fortnight.

Civic officials said Behala would face less waterlogging once the new sewage conduit was made operational.

Mayor Firhad Hakim inspected the conduit on Sunday.

Last year, a 4.5km-long conduit was laid under Diamond Harbour Road. “Both sewers stretch till the Joka drainage pumping station, from where water is drained into canals,” an official said.

The 8ft-diameter pipe inspected on Sunday is made of reinforced cement concrete. The inner surface is protected with a jacket.

“Once this conduit is functional, waterlogging in large parts of Behala will reduce,” the official said.

The Rs 98-crore project was executed under the Asian Development Bank-funded Kolkata Environment Improvement Project of the civic body.

“The sewer line was built using a micro-tunnelling technology. Trenches measuring 5X5m were dug at intervals of 250m, causing minimal disruption to traffic,” an engineer said.

CMC sources said engineers would conduct several rounds of inspection over the next few days to ascertain whether the conduit could be pressed into service.
