Seven ISF activists arrested from several pockets of Bhangar in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday for violence

Supporters allegedly clashed with police and hurled bombs near Kanthalia High School during counting of votes for zilla parishad seats of Bhangar-II

At least seven ISF activists were arrested from several pockets of Bhangar in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday in connection with the violence on the night of July 12 that had claimed three lives and injured several others.

ISF supporters allegedly clashed with police and hurled bombs near Kanthalia High School during the counting of votes for zilla parishad seats of Bhangar-II unleashing panic among people.

Police said on Tuesday a team of Kashipur police arrested Chottu Seikh, a wanted ISF activist, and six others from Panapukur and Polerhat-Nayabad area, while detaining over half a dozen ISF supporters for their suspected role behind the July 12 night violence.

"Investigations have revealed that these persons were involved in the spate of violence that occurred in the past week and later took shelters at various hideouts. Our sleuths got some tip-offs and conducted raids with the support of central forces personnel and arrested these persons for their alleged involvement in the violence.

On Sunday night, the police arrested a Karimul Mollah, a senior ISF leader and husband of party's zilla parishad candidate Jahanara Biwi, in connection with an alleged attack on police personnel at the Kanthalia high school counting centre on July 12 night.

The police said Karimul took shelter in Digha and was arrested while returning home.

Violence had gripped Bhangar in the run-up to the panchayat polls. On the final day of submission of nominations, three persons were killed while on the day of voting two others were killed.

The killings did not end on July 8 and a few days later, three more persons were killed during the counting of ballots.

Another person who had suffered injuries on counting day died last Saturday.

So far, at least nine persons have been killed in Bhangar in poll-related violence.
