A team of foresters recovered 27 parakeets in Siliguri on Thursday and arrested a person who had been carrying the birds.
The team from Dabgram forest range of Baikunthapur forest division intercepted Gopal Kundu of Bhujiapani of Bagdogra, Naukaghat, from the southern part of the city. Kundu, who had kept the parakeets in a bag, was apparently planning to sell them in a rural market.
Catching, trapping and sale of parakeets are illegal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Python rescued
Another team from Ambari forest range of Baikunthapur forest division rescued an 11-foot-long Burmese python from Bandhunagar of Rajganj block in Jalpaiguri district on Thursday.
Local residents spotted the snake and immediately informed the foresters, who swung into action and caught it.
Later, the python was released into the forest.
Bangla youth arrested
Prakash Pal, 19, of Thakurgaon district in Bangladesh, was intercepted by troops of the 72nd battalion of the BSF on Wednesday at Kauligarh border outpost of North Dinajpur district, for allegedly trying to infiltrate India.
The BSF then handed the youth over to the Goalpokhar police station.
