“Some local men protested. The three guards, one of them armed with a pistol, began to beat them. Soon, a larger group formed and beat the trio up severely. They had been coming to our village and terrorising us for many months,” said Shanu Halder, a local resident.

A security guard was beaten to death by a mob which was incensed by lewd comments on women in Nadia’s Gayeshpur on Saturday night.

Villagers said three security guards, Janak Sarkar, Milan Moitra and another unidentified youth, rode to Dogachi on a motorcycle on Saturday. The trio, posted at a nearby fishery, allegedly made some lewd comments on women.

While one of the guards fled, the residents beat up the other two severely.

Sources said police had arrived by then and managed to rescue Moitra. Sarkar, who tried to flee to a pond, was caught and thrashed. The police on Sunday recovered the body of Sarkar, a resident of Raghabpur in Ranaghat, from the pond.

The sources said the duo had criminal records and were out on bail. Recently they started working as security guards at a fishery in Haringhata Jhilpar.
