A 22-year-old Calcuttan who came home from the UK on March 13 had visited some places in south Calcutta until testing positive for Covid-19 on Friday, health officials said.

At least 14 people outside his family are suspected to have come in contact with the student after he reached home, they added.

The total number of contacts has been put at 50, including 29 on the flight the student took to Calcutta and seven family members, a CMC official said. Out of the 50, eleven, including the seven relatives, have already been sent to the quarantine facility in New Town.

That suggests four of the 14 outside contacts have been traced. The officials said the others, too, would be tracked down and quarantined.

The student, the second patient to test positive in Calcutta after returning from the UK, has told officials (who spoke to him over the phone or through doctors monitoring him) that the places he visited since his arrival included a temple and a café and possibly a mall.

A health department official said although the UK was not on the list of countries that required mandatory quarantine on March 13, “all international travellers coming to Calcutta had been advised to stay in home quarantine for at least 14 days”.
