A 30-year-old man, who teaches at a school in the port division and was walking to work on Garden Reach Road, was shot at by a biker not far from Metiabruz police station on Monday morning.

Bir Bahadur Singh, a resident of the Lichu Bagan area in Metiabruz, took a bullet from close range and had fallen on Garden Reach Road. The congested pocket is lined with shops and residences. People in the neighbourhood said the motorbike-borne man was without a helmet.

“None of us could identify the biker, who fled after opening fire,” said a shopkeeper in front of whose shop the incident happened.

Singh was taken to SSKM Hospital. From the hospital bed, Singh alleged that a local Trinamul Congress leader had masterminded the attack.

“He had been threatening me and my family because we are RSS supporters. He tried to kill me,” Singh said while being wheeled into the hospital on Monday afternoon.

When Metro contacted the TMC leader, he refuted the charges and said it was a fallout of Singh’s family dispute in Bihar. “I went to meet his family after hearing about the incident. I do not differentiate between supporters of the TMC and the BJP,” he said.

Later in the evening, a group of BJP supporters staged a protest in front of the office of deputy commissioner (port) demanding action against the accused. A case of attempt to murder against an unknown person has been started by Garden Reach police station.
