A two-day Model United Nations (MUN) conference — an inter-school event — will be hosted by the St. Joseph’s School located at Bhaktinagar in Siliguri from Saturday.

“Around 200 delegates will participate from around 10 schools located across Siliguri and in four neighbouring districts,” said Priyam Sarkar, who has taken the initiative to host the event.

MUN conferences are academic simulations of the UN where students perform as delegates of different countries and discuss various global issues while elaborating on the policies and perspectives of the respective countries.

It helps students to develop skills like leadership, public speaking, research and writing. “Also, solutions reached in such events help the students to learn skills of negotiation, conflict resolution and cooperation,” said an academician.

The organisers mentioned students who aspire to be civil servants or serve the country in Indian Foreign Service get an additional option to know about intricacies of the service and how the United Nations functions.

“One of the key motives of the conference is to help in their personality development,” said Sarkar.
