Officials of the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) are scanning CCTV footage to identify the persons who collected some of the cash that was thrown out of a sixth-floor window of a building on Bentinck Street.

According to the DRI, high-value currency notes totalling around Rs 5 lakh was thrown out of an office that was being raided by the agency for alleged fraud.

“Around Rs 4 lakh has been recovered. The rest is missing. It was probably taken away by some of those who had gathered on the road seeing money falling from the sky,” a DRI official said.

Agency sleuths suspect some of the missing cash was collected by employees of the company that was raided — Hoque Mercentile Private Ltd, which has its office on the sixth and seventh floors of 27 Bentinck Street.

“We are checking CCTV footage to identify who all had taken the money,” the official said.

Police sources said CBI had earlier arrested one of the directors of the company in connection with a cow smuggling racket.

DRI officials said the moment sleuths knocked on the door of the company’s office, the cook was instructed to throw unaccounted for cash through a window.

Some of the cash landed on the windowsill. Someone in the office used a mop to throw the notes off the windowsill, while a crowd of around 200 people watched the action from below.
