The Sealdah additional chief judicial magistrate court on Friday extended the judicial custody of Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer arrested in connection with the rape and murder of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, till September 20.

Roy, arrested by the Calcutta police’s special investigation team on August 10, the day after the doctor’s body was found, was not produced before the magistrate because of apprehensions over his safety, and attended the hearing virtually.

The lawyer for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) turned up around 40 minutes late for the hearing on Friday, prompting the judge to question whether the accused should be granted bail.

The accused’s counsel had pleaded for bail claiming that Roy had been framed in the case and that he was completely in the dark about the progress made by the CBI in the case.

Arguing against the appeal for bail, the CBI counsel argued that the investigation was still on and the accused should not be granted bail under these circumstances.

The central probe agency, on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, is investigating the rape and murder of the doctor at the state-run hospital, as well as charges of corruption against Sandip Ghosh, the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital who has been arrested by the CBI in a corruption case.

On Monday, the CBI will submit its report on the investigation before the Supreme Court to a bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud.

Earlier this week, Ghosh was slapped by an unknown person while emerging out of the courtroom after he was produced in court.

Roy, the civic volunteer, was arrested the day after the victim’s body was found in the seminar hall of the Chest department in the emergency building of RG Kar after a Bluetooth headphone was found inside the hall and he was caught on camera outside the building with that headphone around his neck.

Though Roy had reportedly confessed to the Calcutta police, he later retracted and claimed, when he was taken for a polygraph test by the CBI, that he had been forced to confess.
