Authorities of Midnapore Medical College and Hospital on Friday withdrew action it had taken 22 hours ago against a leader of the medical cell of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad, who had been accused by junior doctors of ragging, intimidating and issuing threats to whoever dared to disobey him.

Junior doctors said the accused TMCP leader Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick, who is also a house staff at the hospital, was known for his proximity to Sandip Ghosh who is the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Sources said since Thursday junior doctors at the government facility at their general council meeting charged TMCP leader Mallick and his “henchmen” of continuing to threaten and harass them.

In a written complaint to the principal, Moushumi Nandi, the junior doctors highlighted the “deep-rooted culture” of “syndicates” and “threats” at the medical college, allegedly led by Mustafizur.

“It is very evident that this is led by MMCH TMCP unit leader Mustafizur Rahman Mallick, who holds no official position here but continues to threaten and harass students and junior doctors in all possible ways, with his henchmen and some other undergraduate students,” the complaint stated.

The students demanded that the college take strict action to eliminate this “threat culture” and accused Mallick of using the name of the authorities to run his “rule
of terror”.

“Mustafizur has been terrorising us for a long time. A few months ago, he forced some female students to perform inappropriate dances, detained girls on stage, turned off the lights, and ragged several other students in various ways. His threats have intensified since we began protesting against the RG Kar incident. He has been threatening to ruin our lives, claiming that any complaints against him would have little impact, even if lodged with the health ministry,” a protesting junior doctor said.

“We want a campus free from fear and terror, and the college authorities should file an FIR against individuals like Mustafizur and their followers,” the junior doctor added.

Shortly after the meeting and protest by junior doctors, the college council on Thursday banned Mallick from entering the health facility’s premises till further orders.

However, within 22 hours, the authorities revoked its order and allowed the TMCP leader unrestricted access to the medical college.

“The revocation of the order exposes the nexus between the college authorities and the TMCP leader, who runs a rule of terror in the college,” a junior doctor told The Telegraph.

The doctor said “such was the nexus that the TMCP leader continues to occupy a room in the hostel despite having graduated years ago”.

“It is unfortunate to see that a man who graduated three years ago is still enjoying hostel facilities and his terror writ runs large in the college,” the doctor added and wanted the authorities to direct illegal occupants to vacate hostels.

Though several efforts to speak to Nandi went in vain, sources in the college said as Mallick was a house staff at the hospital such an order could not apply to him.

Before the authorities had revoked the order barring Mallick’s entry to the hospital, speaking to this correspondent Nandi had said: “All allegations made by students will be investigated by an inquiry committee.”

Attempts to contact Mallick remained unsuccessful.
