Sources said at around 2 am, the miscreants reached in front of the shop-cum-residence of Manoj Shah, a trader, in Dinbazar, the largest marketplace in Jalpaiguri town.

Some of the gang members disembarked from the vehicle and broke the gate’s lock of Shah’s house.

A vehicle carrying policemen in plain clothes was patrolling the area. As they saw the other vehicle and some of the miscreants, a couple of them got down to inquire what they were doing in the area at that time.

“Seeing the policemen, the miscreants fired and fled the spot. They had planned a robbery but our men foiled it,” said Khandbahale, Umesh Ganpath, SP, Jalpaiguri.
