The Trinamul’s Panihati legislator Nirmal Ghosh is on Monday being interrogated by the Central Bureau of Investigation sleuths probing the rape and murder of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
This is the second instance that a leader of Bengal’s ruling party has been brought in for questioning by the central agency in the probe into the crime that has shaken the state and the country
Ghosh, who represents the Assembly constituency where the victim’s family lives, was allegedly seen at the hospital where the crime took place and also the crematorium.
The parents of the victim have said that they were pressured into cremating their daughter’s body though they wanted a second autopsy done.
The CBI has made two arrests so far in the case, including the former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh, and Tala police station officer in-charge Abhijit Mondal. The Kolkata Police, who were initially probing the case, had arrested the civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who is still in custody.
The CBI had given the Supreme Court a status report in a sealed cover at the last hearing. Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud had said what the CBI had revealed was “deeply disturbing”.
The top court had also said that the CBI needs time to uncover “the whole truth” behind the rape and murder of the young doctor.
