The junior doctors are pinning hopes on the next Supreme Court hearing to throw up clarity on the progress in the probe into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, and the possible motive behind the crime.
The matter has been listed for hearing by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud at 10.30am on Monday.
The disclosures could open avenues for discussions on whether to end the cease-work that is already 27 days long and has severely impacted services in government medical colleges, said a junior doctor.
The junior doctor added that they were looking forward to some revelations like whether one person or more were involved in the crime and what was the motive.
Clarity on the progress of the probe is one of the unmet demands of the junior doctors.
“We are hoping for some clarity on the CBI probe during the next hearing in the Supreme Court. We want to know whether one person or more than one were involved in the crime,” said Aniket Mahato, a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
“We are also hoping that the CBI’s counsel or the judges speak on these issues and provide some clarity during the next hearing. We have not heard anything about the progress in the probe for several days now. We also want to know what was the motive behind the crime,” he added.
The lone arrest in the rape and murder of the doctor was made on August 10, the day after the crime, by the Kolkata Police. A Kolkata Police civic volunteer was arrested.
Calcutta High Court handed over the probe to the CBI on August 13. There has been no arrest in the rape and murder probe in the 23 days since the central agency was handed the investigation.
A five-member delegation of junior doctors met CBI officers at the CGO complex on August 23 and demanded to know the state of the probe, but the sleuths declined to share any information. The CBI sleuths said they cannot divulge the details of an ongoing investigation being monitored by the Supreme Court, one of the protesting doctors had said.
Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal, whose resignation the protesting doctors have demanded, met the doctors on August 11 and briefed them about the investigation that his force had initially conducted. The commissioner had also agreed to show the autopsy report and CCTV footage to a delegation of the doctors.
The Supreme Court was supposed to hear the RG Kar case on Thursday but it got deferred as CJI Chandrachud has been on leave since September 2.
“We were really looking forward to the Supreme Court’s hearing that was scheduled for Thursday.... We are hoping to know the answers to a lot of questions,” said a junior doctor.
The junior doctors said there was nearly no possibility of ending the cease-work till the next Supreme Court hearing, but they were also discussing how they could reach out to patients.
“We would be discussing among ourselves whether to join emergency duties or start more Abhaya Clinics for the benefit of patients,” said a junior doctor.
