RG Kar 'rape and murder' case: CBI will unravel truth and ensure punishment, says Suvendu Adhikari

Adhikari alleged that the ruling dispensation had initially attempted to portray the woman’s death as a suicide and taken various measures, including a bid to bribe the deceased doctor’s family, to cover it up

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday expressed hope that the CBI would unravel the truth behind the murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta.

Calcutta High Court on Friday transferred theprobe into the murder from police to the CBI.

Adhikari, who had filed a PIL in the high court seeking a CBI investigation, said: “The court has accepted allour demands.”

“We wanted a court-monitored CBI investigation and the court has granted it. This is a heinous crime and the police of Mamata Banerjee government have tried to cover it up,” he added.

Adhikari alleged that the ruling dispensation had initially attempted to portray the woman’s death as a suicide and taken various measures, including a bid to bribe the deceased doctor’s family, to cover it up.

“Why was an unnatural death case initiated, instead of a rape and murder investigation? Why were the victim’s parents made to wait for three hours before being allowed to see their daughter?” Adhikari asked. “Now that the CBI has taken over the investigation, I have complete faith in the CBI to bring out the truth and put behind bars those responsible for snatching away a young daughter from her parents and a competent doctor from the fraternity. May truth prevail. My prayers for the kindred soul who departed untimely.”

The CPM’s lawyer-MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya expressed a similarapprehension.

“There are certain grey areas that need to be answered. Many forensic experts told me that it couldn’t be the work of one person. So the question is whether morethan one person was involved in it,” he said.

“Secondly, the role of the principal is also under question. The police didn’t bring him under the ambit of the investigation. why? He should have been questioned first. There is scope for doubts. The high court has done the right thing in handing over the investigation to the CBI. Mamata Banerjee should nothave any problem,” Bhattacharyya added.

The BJP, too, has raised serious questions on the role of the former principal,Sandip Ghosh.

“Sandip Ghosh resigned and within four hours, he was given a prize posting. Why? What connections does he have? I had also written to the governor about his alleged involvement in illegalities. Everything should be looked into,” state BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar said.

The high court on Tuesday asked Ghosh, who was made the principal of Calcutta National Medical College, to proceed on leave untilfurther orders

The Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the whole thing was “condemnable”.

“The state government should take stern action but apparently remains in a dilemma. The law and order is worsening. The state government is not capable and instead seems intent on helping the accused,” he said.

The Trinamool Congress said Mamata had already said she had no objection if the investigation was handed over to any other agency.

“The high court handed it over to the CBI, so the central agency will now probe. The chief minister has already said clearly that she has no objection,” said Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh.

“But now if the BJP says they want the chief minister’s resignation, then what happened after (various sexual crimes and murdercases in Uttar Pradesh)? Did anybody from the BJP resign?” he asked.
