Around 1,000 people, including students, and teaching and non-teaching staff and alumni of Burdwan University, took out a march on Saturday to denounce the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The protest also addressed the recent murder of a 25-year-old postgraduate student in Burdwan. She was killed on the intervening night of August 14 and 15 and was found dead with her throat slit on a farmland. Her body was spotted just 50 meters away from her home.
The protestors — many of whom were elderly — braved the rain to complete the 1km-long march. The rally began at the iconic Curzon Gate and concluded at the Raj
Bari complex.
“This was like a reunion, but under the most painful circumstances,” said Debmalya Ghosh, a retired assistant registrar and alumnus of the university.
“We, the members of the Burdwan University family, came together today to protest the murders of two students who were like daughters to us. Despite our poor health and the heavy rain, we felt it was important to walk together and express our grief and anger,” he said.
