Trinamul general secretary and heir apparent Abhishek Banerjee put up a social media post on Thursday morning saying that in the last 10 days over 900 rapes have occurred across India, his post on X coming after his conspicuous silence for the past seven days as the protests over the RG kar Medical College horror continued.
“Over the past 10 days, while the nation has been protesting against the #RGKarMedicalcollege incident and demanding justice, 900 RAPES have occurred across different parts of India - DURING THE VERY TIME WHEN PEOPLE WERE ON THE STREETS PROTESTING AGAINST THIS HORRIBLE CRIME. Sadly, a lasting solution still remains largely undiscussed,” Abhishek posted.
His post prescribed the need for strong laws that would complete trials and convictions within 50 days. He also asked for the severest punishment for rapists.
“State governments must act and urgently push the Union for a comprehensive anti-rape law that ensures swift and strict justice. Anything less is merely symbolic and tragically ineffective.” Banerjee wrote.
He ended the post with: “WAKE UP INDIA!”
Abhishek’s post came after a conspicuous silence that had sparked speculation that all was not well within the top echelons of Bengal’s ruling party, under pressure in the RG Kar case that has enraged Calcutta and India.
There were murmurs in the media that Abhishek was not happy with how the administration of chief minister Mamata Banerjee handled the issue.
During the August 14 midnight rampage at the RG Kar, Abhishek put up a post condemning the hooliganism and asked the commissioner of Calcutta police to ensure strict against without seeing party affiliation.
Many believed that his silence on the RG Kar issue for the past seven days indicated his dissatisfaction with the party’s top leadership and the administration. Read chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
There were doubts Abhishek may not attend the Trinamul student wing’s programme on August 28. The Telegraph Online has earlier reported that TMC’s organizational rejigs were put on hold too as the party faced heat from insiders.
Is the ice melting? Banerjee’s Thursday morning’s post suggests so.
His post was followed by posts by other Trinamul leaders, including Rajya Sabha members Saket Gokhale and Sagarika Ghose, highlighting how woman’s safety is a pervasive issue.
What was left unsaid: It is not limited to Bengal or the RG Kar case, so please do not target the Trinamul.
