Calcutta High Court on Tuesday allowed the BJP to conduct its dharna on certain conditions at Shyambazar here, demanding justice for the junior doctor who had been raped and murdered at RG Medical College and Hospital in the city on August 9.

Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj directed Kolkata Police to make adequatesecurity arrangements so that the BJP could conduct its political programme from Wednesday to Friday, between midday and 9pm.

“Kolkata Police hadstopped us from conducting the dharna but the Calcutta High Court has allowed us to carry on with our programme. It is a programme announced by the party and I will do as the party directs. I will sit on a dharna because I am also an MLA,” leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said.

The BJP had announced a continuous sit-in demonstration between Tuesday and Friday, with all MLAs, MPs, and the members of all cells and departments, but the party had to defer the programme after the police denied permission. The BJP moved the court against the police directive.

The BJP also alleged that the police had dismantled their dharna stage on Friday.

Arguing on behalf of BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta, lawyer Billwadal Bhattacharya said although the ruling Trinamool Congress had recently organised a rally, the police were not allowing the BJP to conduct its programme.

Representing the state, Amitesh Banerjee said on Sunday, an application was submitted to the police requesting permission to hold the rally near Gate No. 5 of the Shyambazar Metro station. However, since the rally was planned for a working day, the permission was denied.

“We will conduct the sit-in demonstration continuously from Wednesday to Friday, following all the directives of the court. The MLAs and the MPs will be present at the dharna,” said the BJP’s state unitchief Sukata Majumdar, who also visited the site on Tuesday evening.

Ever since the 31-year-old doctor was murdered, the BJP has been agitating for the resignation of chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
