Junior Union minister and Bongaon BJP MP Santanu Thakur will soon embark on a rally across his Lok Sabha constituency to demonstrate “his strength and acceptability’’ among the electorate, said a source close to the young leader.
Thakur recently emerged as the face of the dissident faction of the party’s Bengal unit.
The announcement of the minister’s decision to lead a rally — dates for the show of strength programme would be finalised soon — is significant in the backdrop of his recent public demand for the removal of Bengal BJP’s general secretary (organisation) Amitava Chakraborty.
The BJP is going through a phase of turbulence since the last month’s reshuffle in the state committee as several prominent faces of the party — like Sayantan Basu, Joy Prakash Majumdar, Ritesh Tiwari — were dropped from it. As Thakur — upset with the new committee because of non-inclusion of any Matua leader — has taken the side of these leaders in their battle against Chakraborty and his team, several BJP insiders think that the bargaining power of the dissidents has increased.
“The minister wants the rally to be a public display of his strength and acceptability amongst the local people. He also wants the dissenters to be present with him in the rally,” said an aide to Thakur.
On Monday, Thakur and the other dissenters met for an ‘‘informal get-together’’ where it was decided that to take their programs forward, a rally must be organised.
“Shantanuda wishes to leave no stone unturned. He wishes to call this rally the Sansad Sampark Yatra and ensure that the current state leadership doesn’t take him lightly,” a source present at Monday’s get-together said.
The state BJP leadership, led by Chakraborty and the party’s co-minder for Bengal Amit Malviya , has communicated the recent happenings to the central leadership. However, sources said the top rung of the party was busy with the Assembly polls in five states.
Bengal BJP’s chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said there was no question of Thakur organising the rally as “a show of strength’’. “He is a respected minister and MP. He is only trying to strengthen the coordination within the party. It is natural an MP would hold a rally in his own constituency.”
Sources close to Thakur said he would invite state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar to the rally to make it apparent that his tussle is with Chakraborty and his team.
