Belur Math, the global headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, will hold a meet of its former students from across the country on December 28 and 29.
The Mission has 200-odd educational institutions across 48 centres in the country.
The two-day event, first ever in the Mission’s history, will be a sequel to the year-long celebrations of the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago address and will see more than 3,500 students brainstorming in the presence of monks, some of whom are the alumni of Mission-run schools and colleges.
“During their formative years in schools, colleges and universities, our students used to have a window view of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. They will now have a view from the rooftop even as they pour out their views and what they have learnt,” Swami Suvirananda, general secretary of the Math and Mission, said. “We, at Belur Math, would like to hear from them in a bridge-building exercise even as we gently remind them of their responsibilities to society.”
The first session (December 28) will be on “What Ramakrishna Mission has taught me”. Some of the illustrious alumni — including Jagadeesh Gopalan of IISc Bangalore; Barindra Sanyal, former director of TCS; and Justice Kotishwar Singh of Gauhati High Court — will share their views.
Swami Smaranananda, the president of the Math and Mission, will deliver a speech at the inaugural session.
Bibek Debroy, the chairman of economic advisory council and a former student of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur, will be present, a monk said.
The inaugural session will be followed by five sessions spread over two days. Among those who will be present are Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, Justice Shailesh Sinha, former judge of Patna High Court, and Tapan Misra of Isro.
The valedictory session on December 29 will have Major General Jarken Gamlin of the Indian Army share the dais with Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Bengal home secretary.
“The topic in one of the sessions is ‘How our alumni can contribute to the Ramakrishna movement and society’. We want to hear our students while engaging with them in a dialogue,” Swami Balabhadrananda, assistant general secretary and member of the board of trustees, said.
Registration for the meet can be done on www.belurmath.org till December 20.
