Former Calcutta police commissioner Rajeev Kumar on Thursday formalised his anticipatory bail at an Alipore court, securing himself from arrest in a Saradha case after surfacing after 25 days.
On Tuesday, Calcutta High Court had granted anticipatory bail to the senior IPS officer, whom the CBI has been looking for in connection with the deposit-mobilisation scam.
A high court bench of Justices S. Munshi and S. Dasgupta had said that if Kumar was arrested by the CBI in connection with the case, he would have to be released immediately on bail by an appropriate court on two sureties of Rs 50,000 each.
The officer turned up at 11.30am on Thursday at the Alipore district and sessions court in a light blue shirt and grey trousers.
After a brief session, during which his lawyers presented the two sureties, Kumar walked out of the courtroom with senior police officers in tow.
“The courts will be closed from Friday till Lakshmi Puja, which is on October 13. So Kumar turned up today to formalise his bail before the holidays begin,” said a source. “He wants to resume office as early as possible.”
There was no clarity on whether Kumar would present himself before the CBI, which had sent him multiple summons.
Senior officers of the CBI said they were going through the high court order before planning to move the Supreme Court against it. Investigating officers said they would inform the apex court about its efforts to track down the IPS officer.
