A sharp spell of rain lashed the city early on Sunday but the rest of the day saw only intermittent light rain.

The sky cleared up around noon.

Though sporadic rain is expected in Calcutta and its adjoining areas over the next two days, there is no threat of heavy rain, a Met official said.

A bulletin issued by the Met department said two weather systems were at play.

“A cyclonic circulation over southeastern Uttar Pradesh extends up to 5.8km above the mean sea level. A trough of low pressure extends from Punjab to south Assam across Haryana, the centre of the cyclonic circulation, and sub-Himalayan Bengal, extending up to 3.1km above the mean sea level,” it said.

Rain is expected for the next 48 hours. But the impact of the systems is more likely to be felt in the northern districts of Bengal, a Met official said.

The Calcutta sky is expected to remain overcast on Monday as well.

But the rain will be intermittent, not heavy, said G.K. Das, director of the India Meteorological Centre in Alipore.

In the past 24 hours, New Market received 58mm of rain, Ultadanga 53mm, Dhapa 50mm and Behala 42mm.
