The Jalpaiguri district administration has agreed to the request of the railways to carry out non-technical repairs of the tracks under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
A source in the district administration said work involve re-enforcing slopes along the rail tracks to prevent erosion. “We have carried out a joint survey and will start the work after the end of this festive season,” he added.
The non-technical work would be done on the rail lines in the panchayat areas of Belakoba, Aravind, Kharia, Mondalghat and Nandanpur Boalmari.
“The work will ensure erosion from the slopes along the rail tracks. Mud and patches of grass will be laid on the slopes to prevent erosion,” said Surajit Chatterjee, an official of the 100-day project of the district administration.
While the district administration would provide the workforce, the technical input would be given by the railways.
“We have taken up many projects under the 100-day scheme, but the work on the rail lines is the first,” said Shilpa Gourisaria, the district magistrate of Jalpaiguri.
