The vice-chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University, Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury, sent his resignation to education minister Partha Chatterjee on Friday evening, accepting responsibility for the chaos during Basanta Utsab celebrations on the campus, a higher education department official said. Some students apparently indulged in misconduct during the festvities on Thursday. The university lodged an FIR with Sinthee police station on Friday. Efforts are on to persuade Basu Ray Chaudhury to withdrawing his resignation. The VC’s four-year tenure ends in June.

Cough syrup arrest

More than 1,200 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup were seized from a man near the India-Bangladesh border on Friday by Border Security Force officers. The man has been arrested. The consignment, valued at close to Rs 2 lakh, was apparently headed for Bangladesh.

Murder charge

A man was arrested in Poddar Nagar, Jadavpur, on Friday on charges of murdering his wife. Ruma Saha, 31, had been found hanging from a ceiling fan at their home in Poddar Nagar on Thursday. Based on a complaint by her mother, police arrested her husband Subal Saha.

Body found floating

The body of a 77-year-old woman was found floating in a pond near Vidyasagar Colony in Ganguly Bagan early on Friday. Anima Chakraborty, a resident of Baghajatin, was declared dead at MR Bangur Hospital. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Two injured

A motorcyclist and a pedestrian wereinjured when an app cab hit the two-wheeler, which then rammed into the pedestrian near the Ultadanga flyover on the Bypass early on Friday. Police identified the motorcyclist as Rituraj Bose, 24, of Duttapukur. The pedestrian is still to be identified. Bose and the pedestrian have been admitted to hospital. Both vehicles have been seized.

Held with gun

A 32-year-old man was arrested with an improvised gun in Rajarhat on Friday, police said. Rajendra Mishra started running when he spotted a police patrol, an officer of Rajarhat police station said. Cops seized the gun and a bullet from him.

Torture charge

Puja Bhandari, 26, a homemaker, lodged a police complaint on Friday against her husband, accusing him of torturing her and fleeing with their sick two-year-old daughter. The complaint was lodged at Santiniketan police station. The woman alleged her husband had married another woman and that was the reason why he had tortured her.

Found dead

A 30-year-old man was found in a drain with severe head injuries in East Burdwan’s Galsi on Thursday morning. Ashraf Ali, a resident of Galsi, was declared dead at hospital. He had been missing since Wednesday night, police said. There have been no arrests so far.

Health check on borders

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday held a video conference with all the district authorities to take stock of ground-level preparedness to fight the spread of coronavirus in Bengal after two confirmed cases were detected in Bhutan.

“We share international borders with Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh. We have to ensure health check-up of people coming in across international borders. We will extend all possible help to the central agencies to deal with the situation,” the chief minister said.
