Protests and demonstrations rocked the North Bengal University (NBU) and Siliguri College here on Tuesday as teachers and employees levelled accusations against the authorities of both the educational institutions on different issues.
On the NBU campus at Shivmandir, the contractual and casual workers resorted to a demonstration, alleging that C.M. Ravindran, the vice-chancellor, had assured them that they would get an increment of 10 per cent in their salaries from this month.
“On February 20, the VC issued an order, saying we would get revised salaries from March. He, however, changed the decision on February 23, reportedly because the governor, who is also the varsity’s chancellor, said it couldn't be done. That is why we have resorted to protests,” said Ranjan Roy, joint convener of the NBU branch of Sara Bangla Trinamool Sikshabandhu Samiti.
The NU has around 450 contractual and casual workers.
On Tuesday, they assembled in front of the administrative building on the campus, shouting slogans against the VC and governor C.V. Ananda Bose. The agitators also burnt the effigies of Bose and Ravindran.
“Let us make it clear that if our demand is not met, we will be forced to launch a demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan in Calcutta,” Roy said.
The VC, sources said, was not at the varsity on Tuesday.
In Siliguri College, a section of faculty members resorted to protests against a remark made by the president of the college’s managing committee.
According to the protesters, Jayanta Kar, the president, said various steps would be taken to identify evasive professors, because of whom the academic performance of students was getting affected.
Vidyavati Agarwal, a professor, said every class was being conducted according to the routine.
“The syllabus was completed long before the exam. Some students, who do not come to the college regularly, are the ones who made this complaint. We have given our 100 per cent for the betterment of the students. Such an allegation is not acceptable,” said Agarwal.
Kar, however, said: “I have not made any remark. Students have made some complaints and the managing committee discussed those. We are perturbed by the results of the first semester of the college and will see that students' performance improves in future,” said Kar.
