A man, who is the prime suspect in the firing following a dispute over overtaking a bike near Park Street last weekend, was arrested from Jharkhand on Wednesday afternoon.
Police identified the man as Mohammad Fahimuddin, alias Sona.
Sona is the brother-in-law of notorious gangster Gabbar who has multiple cases of extortion and murder and is lodged inside the jail for several years.
Sona was an accused in the abduction of Khadim group owner Parthapratim Roy Burman in 2001. He was arrested, too, in connection with the case.
Often referred to as “Kana Sona” (because of an impairment in an eye), Sona would prefer wearing dark shades to cover his eyes, recalled a senior officer who was instrumental in Sona’s arrest for the first time in early 2000 for a case related to Hare Street police station.
Over the years, Sona had shed off his dark glasses and wears spectacles now. He has got into a real estate business, the officer said.
An officer attached to the probe related to the Park Street firing case said Sona and his associates had met Ekhlas Beg, with whom Sona’s associates had an altercation on Friday, over an issue of overtaking. The firing took place the next day on June 15.
“During the meeting, things went out of hand and his (Sona’s) men opened fire. One bullet hit the victim,” said an officer.
Sona, who was also present on the spot, has been booked under sections of attempt to murder and sections of the Arms Act.
After the incident, he had fled. “Based on specific information a team of the anti-rowdy squad of the detective department raided a location in Jharkhand and arrested Sona on Wednesday. He is being brought to Calcutta,” said a senior officer.
Apart from Sona, five others have been arrested in connection with this case.
