There have been a number of clashes between supporters of the SFI, Independents’ Consolidation and the TMCP over the past few days, said an official of the university. A supporter of the SFI alleged that TMCP supporters beat up their supporters in places including Sealdah and Amherst Street on Thursday. They have lodged a complaint with the dean of students on Friday.

The TMCP alleged that the SFI and the IC, upset with the fact that Trinamul student supporters had opened a unit on the campus, tore down their posters and banners. Madhumita Seal, general secretary of the TMCP unit, denied the allegations.

“Since we have been able to expand our support base in Presidency, the SFI and IC are trying to malign us,” she said. The dean of students, Arun Kumar Maity, said: “In order to keep normality on the campus in all respects, the university has taken all steps in terms of rules and regulations”.
